Hemangiopericytoma of cervicothoracic spine: a case report and literature review.

Abstract: A case of hemangiopericytoma in the cervicothoracic spine is reported. A 43-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with pain in the scapular region radiating to the left upper extremity, numbness, and weakness of the legs. Magnetic resonance image revealed an intraspinal, extradural mass at the level of the C6-T2 vertebral bodies. The lesion also involved the dorsal paraspinal area with a giant mass. A total resection of the tumor was performed and histopathological findings revealed a malignant hemangioper… Show more

“…Surgery with the aim of preserving functionality, relieving pain, controlling local recurrence and promising a prolonged survival is the foundational treatment strategy for osseous SFT/HPCs in the spine [4,5,7]. Because SFT/ HPCs, especially grade III, have the character of local infiltration, the local recurrence rate will be high if surgery is inadequate [4,8,10].…”

“…Because SFT/ HPCs, especially grade III, have the character of local infiltration, the local recurrence rate will be high if surgery is inadequate [4,8,10]. The surgical procedures applicable to the spinal column include the simplest subtotal resection, piecemeal total spondylectomy, and the most complex TES [17,[24][25][26].…”

“…This haemorrhagic risk is thought to be responsible for high mortality and morbidity. Preoperative tumor endovascular embolization has been shown to be effective in reducing bleeding during the surgery and facilitating tumor resection [11]. In our case, the tumor could not be resected completely because of the capsular residue adhering to the spinal cord.…”

“…In the radiology literature, there are only case reports or small case series reports of bone HPC (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13). Although most of bone HPC demonstrate as destructive or lytic lesions (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13), radiographic findings are non-specific as well (14).…”
