Helminths found in hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) in three areas of Italy

Abstract: SHORT COMMUNICATIONS the 'sterilise and store' and the 'store and sterilise' regimens. There was no significant difference in activity between these regimens at 30 days or 60 days. This study demonstrated that the method used for producing ceftiofur-impregnated PMMA beads resulted in pharmacokinetic activity, which remained after manufacture and sterilisation by autoclaving. A reduction in antibacterial activity could not be detected immediately following a single sterilisation procedure. No reduction in activ… Show more

“…Some of species composition in our study was already reported in E. concolor, however, it is the first time that O. erinacei has been reported from Iran. Globally, our post-mortem examination of H. auritus revealed the same parasites to those reported for E. concolor from turkey and E. europaeus from European countries (Boag and Fowler 1988;Ciraka et al 2010;Poglayen et al 2003). This is worthwhile to clarify that age-related differences have been reported in helminth infections of hedgehogs, where higher infection rates were observed with increasing age (Majeed et al 1989).…”

“…For instance, Dicrocoelium dendriticum and Haemonchus contortus were found in E. europaeus and in Atelerix albiventris (Poglayen et al 2003;Kaikabo et al 2007). Although it is clear that hedgehogs are susceptible to these helminths, their role as a reservoir host in the epizootiology of these parasites requires further study.…”

“…In Europe, epidemiological studies on the parasite fauna of hedgehogs have been conducted in Germany (Laux 1987;Wieland 2007), Norway (Keymer et al 1991) and Italy (Poglayen et al 2003). Studies on British hedgehog parasites focused particularly on parasitic lung disease (Majeed and Cooper 1984;Majeed et al 1989;Robinson and Routh 1999;Cousquer 2004;Molenaar 2008, unpublished data), and few epidemiological studies of hedgehog parasites have been undertaken in Great Britain.…”

“…Furthermore, hedgehogs serve as a reservoir for a variety of pathogens; therefore loss of this species could consequently cause a significant disparity between parasites and wildlife in the UK (Gaglio et al 2010). Additionally a number of these pathogens are zoonotic and therefore carry the risk of transferring disease to humans (Khaldia et al 2012).Although there have been several studies of hedgehog parasites in other countries (Laux 1987;Boag and Fowler 1988;Lowenstein et al 1991;Slapeta 1999;Poglayen et al 2003), the parasites of hedgehogs in Iran have received little attention, and the studies that have been published are quite limited. The aim of this study was to macroscopic and microscopic examination of lung Crenosoma striatum in hedgehog.…”
