Macroscopic and microscopic examination of pulmonary Crenosoma striatum in hedgehog

Abstract: The aim of study was to necropsy and histopathology evaluation of lung Crenosoma striatum in hedgehog. In July 2012, 10 porcupines were collected from Urmia city and transferred to parasitology lab of the veterinary faculty where they were euthanized by ketamine (over 40-90 mg/kg) intraperitoneally. In this study the lungs were assessed through naked eyes regarding parasite presence upon washing. The lung tissue was examined under loop microscope in order to finding small worms in lung parenchyma. The worms we… Show more

“…The resulting pneumonia is often a fatal disease in hedgehog, leading to lung abscessation, pleuropneumonia, and secondary bacterial infections involving organisms such as Bordetella bronchiseptica and Pasteurella multocida . Clinically, the co‐infection ranges from asymptomatic forms to a severe respiratory disease with dyspnea, wheezing, cough, exercise intolerance, and weight loss . Common anthelmintic drugs, such as levamisole, are an efficient and safe treatment of verminous pneumonia in hedgehogs, although animals with severe pathology and heavy worm burdens suffer irreversible lung damage and pulmonary consolidation after treatment …”

“…Eucoleus aerophilus has a direct cycle and the mammalian final host becomes infected by ingestion of larvated eggs from the environment or from the consumption of earthworms as facultative intermediate host . The adults of both C striatum and E aerophilus live and mate in trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles of hedgehogs, causing inflammatory reaction and hemorrhage . C striatum morulated eggs and larvae occur in tracheobronchial tree of the definitive host, whereas eggs with a finely granular embryo occur with E aerophilus .…”
