Heliconia Genotypes Under Partial Shade: I. Shooting and Blooming

Abstract: In the Northeast Region of Brazil, the weather conditions are very suitable for growing heliconia plants of great potential for the cut flower industry. There is vigorous vegetative growth, producing many strong lateral shoots, forming large clumps. The Federal Rural University of Pernambuco State (UFRPE) maintains its own Heliconia Germplasm Collection, which was the source of the 10 genotypes evaluated in this study. The experimental design was the randomized complete block design, with four replications. Cu… Show more

“…The lowest leaf area was observed in Acc.18 (9.38 cm 2 ). The differences in the length and leaf area might be due to the genetic influences of the genotypes and this variability may be associated with adaptability to the climatic conditions (Costa et al, 2009). Similar observations were made by Pal et al (2018) in Balsam, Priyanka et al (2017) in crossandra and in hibiscus (Seeruttun and Ranghoo-Sanmukhiya, 2013).…”

“…It is known that Costus species grow better under partial shade; however, studies on the influence of shading or light on plant growth, development, and flowering were not found. This kind of information, though, is essential for planning of planting, production, and agribusiness activities that such crop may generate (COSTA et al, 2009). Our objective was to evaluate the influence of different colored shade nets and light conditions on the initial growth of Costus longebracteolatus and Costus spiralis 'French Kiss'.…”
