Helicobacter pylori Infection in Recurrent Abdominal Pain

Abstract: The presented data suggest that gastritis induced by H. pylori may be associated with recurrent abdominal pain and that in Switzerland infections with H. pylori primarily involve persons who are non-Swiss. A combined therapy results in eradication of the bacterium and in improvement of the clinical symptoms in a significant majority of the patients.

“…Many investigators from different parts of the world have observed an association between H. pylori and recurrent abdominal pain,[7981] whereas many others have failed to find an association between the same. [8287] Finally, a meta-analysis of 45 studies in children with H. pylori and outcome found a weak and inconsistent evidence of an association between H. pylori infection and classic recurrent abdominal pain.…”

“…[3][4][5][6][7][8] To avoid, induction of secondary resistance in the infecting H. pylori strains, as well as further expensive and risky investigations, eradication treatment should reach at least 90% in per-protocol analysis. However, most parents (and children when old enough to understand) are willing to have a treatment, although there is no conclusive evidence, that eradication of the infection will improve their symptoms of dyspepsia.…”
