HeLa Cell Adhesion on Various Collagen-Grafted Surfaces

Abstract: Cell adhesion is important to develop cell microarrays and biocompatible materials. Collagen has been reported to be able to improve cell adhesion. In this paper, two collagen coating methods (collagen grafted directly on the substrate and chitosan-modified substrate) were carried out, on which the adhesive behaviors of HeLa cells were studied. An atomic force microscope and a surface potential meter were used to characterize morphologies and electric polarization of these surfaces. It was found that surface e… Show more

“…As a result of this difference, data generated from the dual-channel arrays were in terms of relative intensity values (i.e. ratio form) whereas data from the single-channel arrays were in terms of absolute intensity values (Zhu et al, 2002;Nakanishi et al, 2001). …”

“…An important cellular property in biotechnology applications is adhesion-a cell's ability to attach to a surface in order to grow (Zhu et al, 2002). Depending on the exact application, a cell line that does not adhere to a surface, anchorage-independent, may be strongly preferred over a cell line that adheres to a surface, anchorage-dependent (Lum et al, 2004;Karu et al, 2001).…”

“…Interest in self-assembly of peptides and proteins has been motivated not only by a concern to understand the mechanisms of pathological aggregation but also to understand the functions and mechanisms of higher order assembly of proteins such as collagen. Natural collagen has been found useful in enhancing cell adhesion [26], tissue regeneration [27][28][29], and drug delivery [30,31]; therefore, scaffolds and biomaterials mimicking the natural collagen and enhancing its biological functions have been generated [32][33][34][35][36].…”
