Soybean (Glycine max), an economically significant legume originating from East Asia, serves as a valuable source of protein and oil globally. In Pakistan, soybean is considered a non-conventional oilseed crop, with successful cultivation possible during both the spring and summer seasons. The careful selection of appropriate varieties is a primary concern for soybean growers in the country. Therefore, experiments were conducted utilizing the newly developed varietal line in the agroecological zone of Tandojam to select the most suitable and adaptable varieties. A total of forty-six newly developed varietal lines, which have not yet been released, were evaluated alongside four released varieties (Ajmeri, Faisal, Jack, and Rawal) that are already being cultivated in various regions of the country. The field experiments were carried out at the experimental area of the Nuclear Institute of Agriculture (NIA) in Tando Jam during the spring and summer seasons of 2018. Agronomic traits were recorded for each variety, and weather data were obtained from the Pakistan Meteorological Department. All agricultural practices were followed. The results indicate significant variations among the genotypes for all evaluated characteristics. Based on grain production, NIBGE32 exhibited the highest performance, achieving a notable yield of 22g during the summer season, which was 30% higher than the yield of the top-performing control variety, Faisal. Other newly developed varietal lines, namely NIBGE 18, NIBGE 8, NIBGE 45, and NIBGE 41, also demonstrated promising high-yield potential. These varieties displayed comparatively superior growth and yield outcomes. Germination percentage significantly vary in the spring and summer season (Mann-Whitney U =7925, P<0.01); whereas days to maturity, plant height, leaf area, lowest pod height, 100-grain weight, biological yield, seed weight per plant, were not significantly different in two seasons. This suggests a potential for these varietal lines to be cultivated in both seasons. This research endeavours to offer valuable insights and recommendations to farmers and policymakers, aiming to augment soybean production and advance agricultural sustainability in the region of Sindh.

Sesame (Sesamum indicum) is an important oilseed crop with rising demand due to its high oil quality. To meet these future demands, there is an urgent need to develop and integrate new breeding strategies. While genomic resources have advanced genetic research in sesame, implementation of high-throughput phenotyping and genetic analysis of longitudinal traits remains limited. Here, we combined high-throughput phenotyping and random regression models to investigate the dynamics of plant height, leaf area index, and five spectral vegetation indices throughout the sesame growing seasons in a diversity panel. Modeling the temporal phenotypic and additive genetic trajectories revealed distinct patterns corresponding to the sesame growth cycle. We also conducted longitudinal genomic prediction and association mapping of plant height using various models and cross-validation schemes. Moderate prediction accuracy was obtained when predicting new genotypes at each time point, and moderate to high values were obtained when forecasting future phenotypes. Association mapping revealed three genomic regions in linkage groups 6, 8, and 11 conferring trait variation over time and growth rate. Furthermore, we leveraged correlations between the temporal trait and seed-yield and applied multi-trait genomic prediction. We obtained an improvement over single-trait analysis, especially when phenotypes from earlier time points were used, highlighting the potential of using a high-throughput phenotyping platform as a selection tool. Our results shed light on the genetic control of longitudinal traits in sesame and underscore the potential of high-throughput phenotyping to detect a wide range of traits and genotypes that can inform sesame breeding efforts to enhance yield.

Currently, Brazil is the largest producer and exporter of soybeans in the world. Most of this cultivation is concentrated in the Cerrado region, which has soils with low boron levels. Boron performs functions that are directly linked to plant performance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic performance of soybean cultivars with and without boron fertilization. Two field experiments were carried out in the agricultural years 2018/2019 and 2019/2020. Each experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with four replications and 10 soybean cultivars (Desafio, Foco, Bonus, Maracaí, 7067, 7110, 7739, 8372, 7100, and Population). Boron fertilization was carried out at the V3 stage of the crop using ulexite (10% of boron) at a rate of 3194 kg ha−1 and 0.0 kg ha−1 of B. The application of boron to the soil increased plant height, pod insertion height, number of branches, main stem diameter, and number of pods per plant, in addition to increasing the cycle of these cultivars. The cultivars 7110, 7739 and Desafio did not statistically differ in terms of grain yield in response to boron fertilization. The cultivars Foco, Bonus, Maracaí, 7067, 8372, 7100, and Population responded favorably to this fertilization. Furthermore, genetic breeding programs incorporate advanced strategies, such as the use of boron fertilization, in order to improve the performance of the selected genotypes. Implementing boron fertilization as an integral part of breeding programs helps not only to achieve high-yielding cultivars but also to optimize key agronomic traits. This integrated approach not only boosts breeding research but also provides a solid basis for sustainable and efficient agricultural practices.
