Height to first pod: A review of genetic and breeding approaches to improve combine harvesting in legume crops

Abstract: Height from soil at the base of plant to the first pod (HFP) is an important trait for mechanical harvesting of legume crops. To minimise the loss of pods, the HFP must be higher than that of the blades of most combine harvesters. Here, we review the genetic control, morphology, and variability of HFP in legumes and attempt to unravel the diverse terminology for this trait in the literature. HFP is directly related to node number and internode length but through different mechanisms. The phenotypic diversity a… Show more

“…Erect varieties showed an increase in yield and a spreading variety showed no response (Table 6). (Li et al, 2022;Kuzbakova et al, 2022;Kushwah et al, 2020;Araméndiz-Tatis et al, 2023;Choi et al, 2021). In terms of Flower color (FC), twenty varietal lines and two control varieties, Rawal and Jack, have white flowers while the remaining varieties had pink flowers (Table 6).…”

“…Plant height is a key trait in indeterminate crops, such as sesame, affecting the whole plant architecture, seed yield, and yield components (Kim et al, 2022; Kuzbakova et al, 2022). Several studies have been conducted in sesame to assess the genetic architecture and optimal prototype of PH to maximize seed yield (Wei et al, 2015; Wang et al, 2016; Miao et al, 2020).…”

“…The PIH variable is taken into account in breeding programs to facilitate mechanized harvesting, for which a height between 10 and 15 cm is considered optimal [19,20]. Cultivars below this height range can be physically damaged by stones or other debris on the soil surface [21]. In this way, all the genotypes evaluated here achieved a PIH suitable for mechanized harvesting, especially 7739, Maracaí, 7067, and the Population.…”
