Heidegger's concept of being-in-the-πóλις.

Abstract

This article explores the hypothesis that Heidegger's (1927=1996) interpretation of Aristotle's practical concepts in Basic Concepts of Aristotelian Philosophy (2002a=2009)-especially in connection with the term po ´kı1 (po ´lis), the community of humans, besides filling a gap regarding a more detailed description of being-with-others in Being in Time (Heidegger, 1996), also offers a convincing answer to the so-called existential solipsism problem and a positive insight of how rhetoric can be brought together with hermeneutics and phenomenology to enlighten the coexistence. To carry out this task, we will present some implications of Heidegger's translation of joıvxvı ´a (koino ¯nia, usually rendered as community) as Miteinandersein, that is, being-with-one-another, and its connection with the expression (zo ¯on lo ´gon e ´chon), which designates the human being as the living thing that (as living) has language.Heidegger's (1927=2001) major work, Being and Time, was accused of offering an unconvincing version of Dasein's relation to the other. The dissatisfaction that many interpreters have exhibited regarding this topic can be summarized as follows: (a) The other appears most of the time in the framework of everydayness, especially related to the ''one'' (das Man) and the falling; (b) even if being-with-the-other has a place in Dasein's existence, the other does not play any decisive role in it, as Dasein's authentic potentiality-for-being reveals itself only when it hears the claim of its own consciousness-its resoluteness is the outcome of a silent deliberation, in opposition to the idle talk of the ''one;'' and (c) fundamental ontology is supposed to be detached from ethics and politics, but its description of Dasein-with or coexistence 1 (Mitdasein) fails to account for this phenomenon precisely because of the avoidance of those mentioned dimensions.This article sets forth some relevant points to consider these objections, relying more deeply on an interpretation of some passages of Heidegger's (2002a=2009) earlier work, Basic
