Many innovative technologies have been developed around the world to meet its energy demands using renewable and nonrenewable resources. Solar energy is one of the most important emerging renewable energy resources in recent times. This study aims to present the state-of-the-art of parabolic trough solar collector technology with a focus on different thermal performance analysis methods and components used in the fabrication of collector together with different construction materials and their properties. Further, its industrial applications (such as heating, cooling, or concentrating photovoltaics), solar energy conversion processes, and technological advancements in these areas are discussed. Guidelines on commercial software tools used for performance analysis of parabolic trough collectors, and international standards related to performance analysis, quality of materials, and durability of parabolic trough collectors are compiled. Finally, a market overview is presented to show the importance and feasibility of this technology. We believe the compilation of reviews related to the above aspects will further provide impetus for the development of this technology in the near future.

Competitiveness of solar energy is one of current main research topics. Overall efficiency of solar plants can be improved by using advanced control strategies. To design and tuning properly advanced control strategies, a mathematical model of the plant is needed. The model has to fulfill two important points: (1) It has to reproduce accurately the dynamics of the real system; and (2) since the model is used to test advanced control strategies, its computational burden has to be as low as possible. This trade-off is essential to optimize the tuning process of the controller and minimize the commissioning time. In this paper, the modeling of the large-scale commercial solar trough plants Mojave Beta and Mojave Alpha is presented. These two models were used to test advanced control strategies to operate the plants.

In this study, a numerical investigation of the solar parabolic trough collector with an area of 0.856 m2 by combination of Monte Carlo Ray‐Trace (MCRT) and finite volume method (FVM) has been carried out using the FLUENT software. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of metal foams and nanofluids on the thermal performance of a direct absorption parabolic trough collector (DAPTC). For this purpose, three‐dimensional fully developed laminar convection heat transfer of Al2O3 and TiO2/water nanofluids is examined by 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 vol %. Furthermore, 64 cm copper‐filled porous media in a volumetric absorbent tube are applied. The obtained results of numerical simulations are compared with the experimental data. The results demonstrate a good agreement between the numerical simulations and experimental data. The results indicate that the maximum efficiency was 34.51% for TiO2/water at 0.3 vol %. Furthermore, using porous media with high absorption coefficient and scattering coefficient that could absorb more incoming radiation and transfer to heat transfer fluid can result in increasing the efficiency of the collector. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 38: 727–740, 2019
