Numerical investigation of efficiency enhancement in a direct absorption parabolic trough collector occupied by a porous medium and saturated by a nanofluid

Abstract: In this study, a numerical investigation of the solar parabolic trough collector with an area of 0.856 m2 by combination of Monte Carlo Ray‐Trace (MCRT) and finite volume method (FVM) has been carried out using the FLUENT software. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of metal foams and nanofluids on the thermal performance of a direct absorption parabolic trough collector (DAPTC). For this purpose, three‐dimensional fully developed laminar convection heat transfer of Al2O3 and TiO2/water nan… Show more

“…Ref. [34] conducted a numerical investigation of the solar parabolic trough collector with an area of 0.856 m 2 by combination of Monte Carlo Ray-Trace (MCRT) and finite volume method (FVM) using the FLUENT software. M. Sheikholeslami et al [35] reviewed empirical and numerical analyses of thermal performance development in flat plate solar collectors (FPSCs) based on the up-to-date developments, methods, critical economic factors, the significance of solar water heating, and the challenges faced by the implementations of such solar water heating systems, which could be beneficial for all stakeholders of solar energy.…”

“…In another recent attempt, Bårdsgård 28 Bozorg et al 30 and Tayebi et al 31 simulated a novel parabolic trough solar collector having an annular porous layer inside the absorber tube. Meanwhile, Yegane and Kasaeian 32 simulated a flat plate solar collector filled with a hybrid nanfluid-saturated porous medium in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field.…”

“…It should be noted that in most of them, air and ceramic foams are used as the HTF and porous media, respectively. Few studies have considered the volumetric receiver occupied by a liquid saturated metal foam . Recently, Valizade et al investigated the application of copper metal foam in a direct absorption PTC at different mass flow rates, inlet temperatures, and porous insert configurations.…”
