Heart-Rate Variability Effects of β-Adrenoceptor Agonists (Xamoterol, Prenalterol, and Salbutamol) Assessed Nonlinearly with Scatterplots and Sequence Methods

Abstract: Full antagonists of the cardiac beta-adrenoceptor improve heart-rate variability (HRV) in humans; however, partial agonism at the beta2-adrenoceptor has been suggested to decrease HRV. We therefore studied the HRV effects of some partial agonists of the beta1- and beta2-adrenoceptors in normal volunteers. Under double-blind and randomised conditions (Latin square design), eight healthy volunteers received placebo; xamoterol, 200 mg (beta1-adrenoceptor partial agonist); prenalterol, 50 mg (beta1- and beta2-adre… Show more

“…With salbutamol administration, HR increased by 12.9 bpm on day 1 (in‐clinic), and by 11.8 bpm on day 3, and 5.4 bpm on day 5 (measured at home). These data were in keeping with reported observations of ~ 5–12 bpm . When examining the continuous data set beyond 6 hours (day 1), it was not possible to appreciate continuous separation between salbutamol and no treatment.…”

“…Briefly, a Poincaré plot is the scatterplot of current R-R interval against the R-R interval immediately preceding it and provides summary information about both overall and beat-to-beat HRV. The widths of Poincaré plot pattern at 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th percentiles of R-R intervals distribution -W10, W25, W50, W75 and W90were quantified according to Schechtman et al (1992) and Silke et al (1999). Quantitative analysis of the Poincaré plot ( Fig.…”

“…N, total number of identified spontaneous baroreceptor sequences Effects of inhaled salbutamol on cardiovascular autonomic control Stimulation of the b2-adrenoceptor further exerts important effects on autonomic cardiovascular control. Administration of salbutamol via the oral route has previously been shown to reduce overall heart rate variability and increase sympathetic components of HRV [44]. Only few reports, however, have investigated the effects of inhaled short acting b2 agonists on HRV.…”
