Healthcare services relaxing natural selection may contribute to increase of dementia incidence

Abstract: Ageing and genetic traits can only explain the increasing dementia incidence partially. Advanced healthcare services allow dementia patients to survive natural selection and pass their genes onto the next generation. Country-specific estimates of dementia incidence rates (all ages and 15–49 years old), Biological State Index expressing reduced natural selection (Is), ageing indexed by life expectancy e(65), GDP PPP and urbanization were obtained for analysing the global and regional correlations between reduce… Show more

“…Thus, it is possible to hypothesize a potential link between mutations and muscle variability (Krämer et al 2006). You et al (2022) conclude that mutations are an inevitable consequence of the poor quality of the chemical bonds between the bases that make up DNA. Their number is gradually increasing in humans due to the species' increased exposure to mutagenic agents as well as better health protection.…”

“…The independent variable is the medical-services-associated reduced natural selection (measured with Biological State Index [I bs ]). [28][29][30][33][34][35] It is well-established that CVD is a lifestyle-associated disease 5 ; however, it is known that CVD has multiple aetiologies that may be contributing to the worldwide increase in CVD incidence rate. People could develop CVD at any stage of their life.…”

“…The independent variable, Biological State Index (I bs ) was extracted from the previous publications [19,20,[28][29][30][31] I bs has been more and more recognized as an index of the side effects of medical services, which reduce natural selection leading to genetic background accumulation in human population. The side effects of medical services measured with the I bs have been associated with the increase of non-communicable diseases with genetic backgrounds [29], for example adult obesity [19,20], cancers [30], dementia [31] and type 1 diabetic disease [28].…”

“…The role of I bs in accumulating detrimental genetic background at population level has been tested with the positive correlations of I bs to cancer incidence [30], dementia incidence [31], type 1 diabetes incidence…”
