Health outcomes of crisis driven urban displacement: A conceptual framework

Abstract: With urbanisation, cities are increasingly home to greater proportions of the world's population. As this transition has significant implications on human health, the epidemiology of diseases among relatively stable urban populations is growing. As humanitarian crises increasingly drive people to urban centers rather than traditional refugee camps, however, rapid and massive urban displacements will increase in frequency. This paper explores the idea that such urban displacements combine epidemiological featur… Show more

“…Displacement, eviction, and homelessness are adverse determinants of health and can contribute to susceptibility of infection [35][36][37]. Forced evictions, sometimes in the name of hygiene and dispersing dense slum populations to avoid communicable disease spread, have regularly contributed to greater spread of disease among both the displaced populations and the general population [38,39].…”

The health needs of a displaced population, migrating often to neighboring countries with resource scarcity, and political controversies, vary widely [43]. Sociocultural and political differences may influence the given assessment, and access to and delivery of healthcare and many other helpful interventions to the displaced population [44].…”
