Health Outcomes of a Series of Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music Sessions: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Evidence is promising that a series of Bonny Method of GIM sessions may be effective for improving both psychological and physiological health and may be therapeutically indicated for adults seeking treatment with medical, mental health, and nonclinical needs. Further research is needed to replicate findings within outcomes and populations.

“…Music-guided imagination can reduce blood pressure and plasma cortisol levels, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve the quality of life and well-being of cancer patients. [ 22 ] In the process of tumor, psychological stress, and sleep disturbance can promote an inflammatory response, imbalance of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and decrease of immune surveillance function. [ 23 ] Music can regulate the stress response of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis [ 24 ] and has a therapeutic effect on mental diseases such as depression.…”

“…[2, 3, 8, 17] We know that compositional features of the music itself are often responsible for outcomes. For example, the use of rhythm, tempo, melodic contour, and/or harmonic structure to improve gait parameters[8, 32, 33] regulate breathing[3436] regulate emotion, [37] elicit imagery[3840] or influence other physiological or psychosocial responses. [33] We also know that relational aspects of interventions, such as group music making or the use of improvisation, are important features that also contribute to positive health outcomes.…”

“…The quality of each study was assessed using the Checklist to Evaluate a Report of Nonpharmacological Trial (CLEAR-NPT) [8] which was designed to assess standardization, influence of treatment provider, blinding and risk of bias. The CLEAR-NPT has been adapted by music therapists [4,9] to evaluate the quality of music therapy research studies. Following those examples, 1 point was scored if the answer to an item was "yes;" 0 points were scored if the answer was no.…”

“…Scores for each study could range from "0" indicating a low quality to "10" indicating high quality. In addition, each study was assessed for risk of bias as described by McKinney & Honig [4] and Yinger and Gooding [9]. Studies that scored 1 point for questions 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8 on the quality assessment checklist (Table 2) were considered to have a low risk of bias.…”
