Health maintenance organizations and medical education

Abstract: Academic medical centers (AMCs) are under pressure to increase ambulatory medical education, but their capacity for such teaching is limited. Health maintenance organizations (HMOs) are a large and growing institutional setting that could participate in clinical education. Until now, relatively few HMOs and AMCs have reached agreements about teaching, because traditional suspicions have blocked collaboration. Responding to a case prepared as the basis of discussion, about 450 academics and HMO medical director… Show more

“…A series of CNS-related adverse events such as headache, dizziness, fatigue, and nausea have been linked to Lorcaserin treatment. Supporting the notion that the brain plays a seminal role in glycemic control, coadministration of Lorcaserin with metformin or sulfonylureas potentiates the ability of the antidiabetic agents to improve HbA1c and fasting glucose levels in obese subjects with T2D (Moore, 1990). Preclinical studies have explored the prospect of combinatorial targeting of 5-HT2A/C receptors and GLP-1RAs (Anderberg et al, 2017), and it appears that the benefits of Lorcaserin can be increased in combinatorial settings.…”

“…More care has moved not only to outpatient clinics but also, with pressure from insurers, into managed care group practices, with incentives to pursue disease management and prevention for cost control in individual patient care and for promised benefits to practice populations, 46,47 if not to for-profit insurers. Education, in turn, is being moved into these practice organizations, though with uncertain pedagogical attention to chronic illness care and prevention.…”

“…Moore 13 directly assessed the barriers to collaboration between HMOs and AMCs. Approximately 450 academicians and HMO medical directors responded to a case Moore prepared designed to elicit barriers and identify incentives for cooperation between AMCs and HMOs.…”
