Health effects of exposure to indoor volatile organic compounds from 1980 to 2017: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) indoors is thought to be associated with several adverse health effects. However, we still lack concentration-response (C-R) relationships between VOC levels in civil buildings and various health outcomes. For this paper, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies to summarize related associations and C-R relationships. Four databases were searched to collect all relevant studies published between January 1980 and December 2017. A to… Show more

“…The effect is reflected in the high number of complaints associated with VOCs exposure ( Table 2 ). This goes on to provide indication of future health impacts to workers health and wellbeing aligning with a report that exposure to low levels of VOCs is associated with higher levels of asthma, cancer, and other adverse health effects [ 36 , 37 , 38 ]. As described earlier, to the south of the area of the BPA is the BOA, and above these two workstations is the FFA.…”

“…However, changes in ozone and other pollutants should also be considered in these decisions, as they too are associated with adverse health outcomes. ( Soares and Silva, 2022 , Guo et al, 2022 , Liu et al, 2022 )…”

“…The indoor formaldehyde concentration was summarized and was further used to obtain the indoor equivalent exposure level of children and adults with combining the population‐related exposure time in China. The health effects of formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were evaluated in other articles 28 …”

“…The health effects of formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were evaluated in other articles. 28 Then through full-text screening of the left studies, the studies were excluded if (1) met one of the exclusion criteria that were mentioned above for the title and abstract screening; (2) no detailed descriptive information on site testing (location, time, building type, sampling method, sample size); and (3) did not report the mean or median concentration. Finally, the studies left were included in the systematic review and in the analysis of exposure level.…”
