Health benefits of physical activity: the evidence

Abstract: P hysical inactivity is a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and a widening variety of other chronic diseases, including diabetes mellitus, cancer (colon and breast), obesity, hypertension, bone and joint diseases (osteoporosis and osteoarthritis), and depression.1-14 The prevalence of physical inactivity (among 51% of adult Canadians) is higher than that of all other modifiable risk factors. 15 In this article we review the current evidence relating to physical activity in the primary and secon… Show more

“…Physical inactivity is a well‐known risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD)1, 2 and premature mortality from CVD 2, 3, 4. One explanation for these findings is thought to be because of beneficial effects of physical activity (PA) on endothelial function and the relatively less well‐studied biomarkers of atherosclerosis 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.…”

“…Besides its role for weight control, regular physical activity has a powerful independent, favorable overall effect on health status. 45,48 In particular, there is strong evidence that regular exercise is an efficient component for primary and secondary prevention of several chronic conditions associated with overweight and obesity (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, cancer etc.). 48,49 Thus, it seems important to implement treatment strategies that stimulate and facilitate the adoption and maintenance of habitual physical activity among bariatric surgery patients.…”

“…Participating in regular physical activity is effective for the primary and secondary prevention of several chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, cancer, obesity, hypertension, osteoporosis, and depression 1. The Federal Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that healthy adults engage in 150 minutes of moderate‐ to vigorous‐intensity physical activity each week to achieve health benefit 2.…”
