Health Benefits and Chemical Composition of Matcha Green Tea: A Review

Abstract: Japanese matcha is a type of powdered green tea, grown in a traditional way. Shading of the plants during the growth period enhances the processes of synthesis and accumulation of biologically active compounds, including theanine, caffeine, chlorophyll and various types of catechins. Green tea contains four main catechins, i.e., (−)-epicatechin (EC), (−)-epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG), (−)-epigallocatechin (EGC) and (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), of which the latter is the most active and abundant and mat… Show more

“…Green tea extract is a recognized rich dietary source of catechins, containing a substantial amount of catechin, (-)-epicatechin (EC), (-)-epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) [ 30 , 31 ]. A broad range of pharmacological activities have been reported for catechins, including antiviral and nephroprotective activities, which are strongly associated with their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties [ 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ].…”

“…The consumption of tea daily is increasing, and large amounts are consumed by adults (nearly 1 L per person per day on average) in oriental countries 11 . The positive health benefits of tea include the presence of nutrients and minerals, antioxidant activity, favorable taste, aroma, and anticancer properties 17 19 .…”

“…Camellia sinensis use is also associated with a more favorable cardiovascular disease risk profile [ 28 ]. The positive impact of green tea on cardio-metabolic health is related to its high content of polyphenols, in particular catechins, such as epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) [ 29 ]. EGCG is the most prevalent catechin present in green tea, representing approximately 30–50% of the green tea catechin content, is an ester that forms from the reaction of epigallocatechin and gallic acid and acts as an antioxidant and reduces inflammation [ 30 , 31 ].…”
