Health and Economic Impacts Assessment of O3 Exposure in Mexico

Abstract: Health effects related to exposure to air pollution such as ozone (O3) have been documented. The World Health Organization has recommended the use of the Sum of O3 Means Over 35 ppb (SOMO35) to perform Health Impact Assessments (HIA) for long-term exposure to O3. We estimated the avoidable mortality associated with long-term exposure to tropospheric O3 in 14 cities in Mexico using information for 2015. The economic valuation of avoidable deaths related to SOMO35 exposure was performed using the willingness to … Show more

“…We used the entire range of O 3 because there is no compelling evidence of a so-called safe threshold 2 , 18 . However, we performed a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the effect of a safe threshold at 70 µg m − 3 , excluding days with O 3 <70 µg m − 3 and centering the association at 70 µg m − 3 , as commonly done in previous assessments 2 , 13 , 14 , including those by the EEA 4 . Second, for each grid cell and week ( w ) we calculated the weekly averages of AF ( x , w ).…”

“…Several studies have estimated the mortality burden attributable to tropospheric O 3 in different settings 2,[12][13][14] , but a continent-wide assessment of the contribution of O 3 pollution by geographical source is still lacking. In the present study we quantify the health impacts of transboundary-transported O 3 (daily maximum 8-h average) in Europe.…”

“…Additionally, long-term exposure to O 3 has also been found to be related to various respiratory diseases. Therefore, reducing exposure is expected to lessen the risk of the health problems (37).…”

“…Mexico City has one of the highest concentrations of children in the world, with around 500,000 registered births each year. Several studies in recent years evaluated both the mortality and morbidity associated with the effect of pollution in Mexico [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. The high concentration of pollutants, mainly particulate matter and to a lesser extent ozone, has been associated with an increase in different diseases such as neurodegeneration and with excess mortality from cardiovascular and respiratory failure [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”
