“…on May 11, 2018 by guest http://cmr.asm.org/ completely "cleaned" of plaque species by these procedures, even when surgery to get access to the root surfaces is performed (318). If these residual organisms are enriched per-'''centage-wise for the periodontopathic species, then the plaque community that returns could be as proinflammatory as the plaque that had just been suppressed.…”

“…We use PPD as our most reliable predictor of future disease, and on that basis, after we have controlled the infection, we carry out definitive treatment at sites remaining over a certain PPD. It is assumed that the reason that deep pockets are more prone to further breakdown is that it is difficult to gain access to their deeper aspects for personal (Flotra, 1973;Pitcher et al, 1980) and professional (Waerhaug, 1978;Fleischer et al, 1989) cleaning. Definitive therapy is therefore usually directed at reducing PPD by the use of resective or regenerative surgical procedures.…”

“…Although hand scalers are frequently used, considerable time and manual dexterity are required for their effective operation (7). Moreover, hand scalers are unable to reach the deeper root surfaces when the periodontal pockets are more than 4 mm deep (7,8). Consequently, ultrasonic scalers have become more widely used in recent years.…”
