HCV genotypes in Morocco

Abstract: To determine the hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes circulating in Morocco, virus isolates from 105 chronically infected and 19 hemodialysis patients were examined using the line probe assay. Genotypes 1 and 2 only were found among Moroccan patients. Subtypes 1b (47.6%) and 2a/2c (37.1%) were the most common, whereas subtype 1a (2.8%) was less common. Among the hemodialysis patients, only genotype 1 was found with a prevalence of 68.4% for subtype 1b and 15.8% for the subtype 1a. It was also shown that the HCV … Show more

“…The results are scarce and heterogeneous, probably reflecting regional differences in the distribution of HCV genotypes. In the majority of the regions studied, subtype 1b was the most prevalent among patients on hemodialysis [Bouchardeau et al, 1995;Colleoni et al, 1996;Lee et al, 1996;Benani et al, 1997;Bogomolski-Yahalom et al, 1997;Burjel et al, 1998;Chan et al, 1998;Schneeberger et al, 1998]. In the United States, a survey among kidney transplant candidates identified subtype 1a as the most prevalent [Natov et al, 1999].…”

“…In Germany, 77.6% of patients receiving HD are genotype 1 [4]. Although genotype 1a is prevalent in the general population, genotype 1b is more prevalent in patients undergoing HD in the Netherlands [11], Mexico [44], Morocco [45], and France [46]; genotype 2a in Italy [47]; genotypes 1a and 1b in Israel [48] and Indonesia [21]; and genotype 1 in Canada [49]. We may thus conclude that genotypes 1 and 2 are more prevalent in North America and Europe (60%-70%), genotype 3 is more prevalent in the Far East, Asia, and Australia, genotype 4 is more prevalent in Africa and the Middle East, genotype 5 is more prevalent in South Africa, and genotype 6 is more prevalent in Hong Kong.…”

“…In Morocco, early reports about HCV genotypes indicated that the most common was 1b (47.6%) followed by 2a/2c (37.1%) and the less frequent 1a (2.8%). Furthermore, the subtype 1b was most prevalent among older patients, whereas subtype 2a/2c was mainly found among younger ones [Benani et al, ]. Recently, another study conducted in 185 patients chronically infected with HCV, revealed that the main viral subsets belong to subtypes 1b (75.2%) followed by 2i (19.1%), 2k (2.8%) whereas genotype 4 is very rare (0.7%) (Fig.…”
