HCI with sports

Abstract: Recent advances in cheap sensor technology has made technology support for sports and physical exercise increasingly commonplace, which is evident from the growing popularity of heart rate monitors and GPS sports watches. This rise of technology to support sports activities raises many interaction issues, such as how to interact with these devices while moving and physically exerting. This special interest group brings together industry practitioners and researchers who are interested in designing and understa… Show more

“…Since then it has grown steadily, and there are now over an estimated 1400 leagues worldwide. 1 Although there are several roller derby rule sets, the most common are those determined and governed by the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). The WFTDA provides a set of minimum skills requirements that a skater must meet before being considered safe to bout.…”

“…One such example is the use of mobile apps to facilitate the wellbeing of teenagers (Toscos et al 2006). HCI for sports (Mueller et al 2013) is yet another upcoming research track comprising of various elements including exertion games, virtual play, etc. that through novel forms of technology aim to not only provide entertainment but also to support the fitness requirements of adults in various sports based activities such as jogging (Mueller and Muirhead 2015) and basketball (Bogdanovych and Stanton 2015).…”

“…The abundance of jogging apps, sports watches and wearable sensors (for example embedded in shirts and socks [3]) suggests to us that joggers appreciate the opportunity for technology to support their jogging experience. This trend has been recognized and investigated by research [39] while special interest groups (SIGs) at CHI have also been formed to encourage further developments in this area [23,24].…”
