The predominance of unwanted materials lying fallow in the environment, and the availability of information on waste management, offer the opportunity to explore the use of these resources as sources of recovered material. Regulatory drivers aim to harmonise the recovery potentials of wastes, thereby reducing the volumes sent to landfill. In this vein, this paper investigates the emissions from municipal solid wastes, which can lead to major environmental impacts. This study assessed the influence of recovery efforts on solid waste management practices in Nigeria. This was done by examining available literature chronicling pollution from unregulated dumpsites which can bioaccumulate in the environment, causing climatic impacts. It was discovered that emissions from waste can impact soil, water, and air, thus contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Many developed countries have recorded significant improvement in adopting treatment facilities that can enable them to meet up sustainable development goals. However, developing countries still need assistance in developing a sustainable waste management programme that can help change their lifestyle, thus improving the management of the waste they produce. It becomes imperative that making the right choices can change the consumption pattern, thus, reducing the influx of pollutants whilst fostering a clean environment. Thus, a high-level recovery of resources can secure a sustainable future and a healthy environment.

The recovery of materials and components from end-of-life (EoL) ships necessitates the comprehensive demolition of vessels and the implementation of reuse processes to achieve the “circularity” of raw materials, which has potential benefits for economic and environmental sustainability. The European Union’s (EU) legislative policy, as reflected in the Ship Recycling Regulation, has been shifting towards the establishment of green markets for ship dismantling. Various literature reviews have focused on investigating EoL management and demolition activities for ships, as they play a crucial role in promoting sustainability in the ship value chain. This research aims to enhance the current state of knowledge by linking ship recycling and life cycle management activities with circular economy models. The goal is also to introduce a conceptual framework for the effective recirculation of components and raw materials. Scientific publications have been collected, reviewed, and categorized into strategic clusters to identify current and future challenges, to establish a path for potential developments in a circular economy model for ships, and to suggest future research directions that would support the implementation of a circular economy system for ship eco-design, life cycle management, and recycling. Findings provide valuable insights, particularly regarding the recognition of environmental benefits, business opportunities, and the opening of green markets in the context of ship recycling in the EU.

Rheological Investigation of Welding Waste-Derived Graphene Oxide in Water-Based Drilling Fluids

Throughout the world, the construction industry produces significant amounts of by-products and hazardous waste materials. The steel-making industry generates welding waste and dusts that are toxic to the environment and pose many economic challenges. Water-based drilling fluids (WBDF) are able to remove the drill cuttings in a wellbore and maintain the stability of the wellbore to prevent formation damage. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that reports the application of welding waste and its derived graphene oxide (GO) as a fluid-loss additive in drilling fluids. In this research, GO was successfully synthesized from welding waste through chemical exfoliation. The examination was confirmed using XRD, FTIR, FESEM and EDX analyses. The synthesized welding waste-derived GO in WBDF is competent in improving rheological properties by increasing plastic viscosity (PV), yield point (YP) and gel strength (GS), while reducing filtrate loss (FL) and mud cake thickness (MCT). This study shows the effect of additives such as welding waste, welding waste-derived GO and commercial GO, and their amount, on the rheological properties of WBDF. Concentrations of these additives were used at 0.01 ppb, 0.1 ppb and 0.5 ppb. Based on the experiment results, raw welding waste and welding waste-derived GO showed better performance compared with commercial GO. Among filtration properties, FL and MCT were reduced by 33.3% and 39.7% with the addition of 0.5 ppb of raw welding-waste additive, while for 0.5 ppb of welding waste-derived GO additive, FL and MCT were reduced by 26.7% and 20.9%, respectively. By recycling industrial welding waste, this research conveys state-of-the-art and low-cost drilling fluids that aid in waste management, and reduce the adverse environmental and commercial ramifications of toxic wastes.
