Recently, with the development of technology, the number of studies on the need for energy and the possibilities of covering this need in a sustainable way has been increasing. The management of agricultural biomass and waste is cited as one of the challenges as well as a solution. Mersin and Antalya sites, where banana production is intensively practiced in Turkey, were selected as the study region. The potential amounts of energy values obtained from the waste generated during banana cultivation in the field area of study were calculated. The energy potential was calculated on the basis of the conversion of biogas that can be obtained from the waste. The values obtained were analyzed and compared with the levels of electricity used to determine the economic gains that can be achieved for Mersin and Antalya regions. The data on bananas used in study were obtained from the Turkish Statistical Institute (for the years 2016–2020). It is calculated that 2884.43 MWh of electricity can be generated in Mersin and 2218.26 MWh in Antalya per 5 years from the waste generated during banana production. The values of the number of houses whose needs can be met with the calculated five-year potential electricity amount are 1237 in Mersin and 952 in Antalya. It can be considered that reusing the potential energy that can be obtained from banana waste, examined as material for energy, used in agricultural production will result in a positive impetus to agricultural activities. Energy obtained from banana waste can cover a very small amount of the electrical energy needs of agricultural production, ranging from 0.19% to 0.34%. However, it is concluded that the potential amount of energy to be obtained by recycling not only banana waste but also other agricultural and food waste will be even higher.

The study presents the first attempt of determination and mapping of recent biogas potentials (BP) at different scales from province to village level in Çanakkale using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The BP of different scales was calculated based on animal waste amounts from bovine, ovine and poultry farming. The study area covers the ten districts of Çanakkale province with the exception of Imbros and Tenedos Islands. The inventory records of different animal types were obtained from of Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Çanakkale Directorate of Provincial Agriculture and Forestry. GIS procedures are conducted in ArcGIS (10.3) software. Findings revealed that the annual biogas production potential of the whole province is almost 6.4×107 m3. Biga district seemed to include 39 % of overall BP whereas Eceabat district presented a slight percentage of the potential production with the value of approximately 1 %. Moreover, the highest and lowest subscale-level potentials have found in Yukarıdemirci (Biga) and Bahçedere (Ayvacık), with approximately 154×104 m3 and 137 m3 BP, respectively. The overall BP of the province have concluded to be promising, and present study believed to serve as a baseline for future studies related to determination of new biogas plant suitable lands.

Today, in order to meet the increasing energy needs, sustainable and renewable energy production methods are needed in addition to the existing energy sources. Especially taking into consideration the husbandry potential of our country, biogas and energy production through the use of animal waste have emerged as an efficient alternative of production. In this study, the amount of electrical energy that can be produced using cattle manure in the Isparta region was calculated. The husbandry data used in these calculations were obtained from the database of the Turkish Statistical Institute. The potential amount of manure that can be obtained from all of the cattle in the Isparta region was determined as 1,117,002.08 tons. The amount of existing potential manure that can be collected and used for electricity generation was determined as 558,501.03 tons. The amount of biogas to be obtained as a result of the use of animal manure in biogas plants was determined as 12,815,682.93 m 3 . The amount of electrical energy that can be produced by using the obtained biogas was calculated as 60,233.71 MW. This electrical energy, obtained as a result of the calculations, will be able to meet 6.00% of the electricity needs of Isparta Province annually.
