Hay Fever and Asthma as Markers of Atopic Immune Response and Risk of Colorectal Cancer in Three Large Cohort Studies

Abstract: Background: In a previous analysis of 12 cancers in the Cancer Prevention Study II (CPS-II) cohort including follow-up from 1982-2000, having both hay fever and asthma was associated with lower colorectal cancer mortality. The combination of these allergic conditions may be a marker for allergy-related immune responses that could inhibit colorectal carcinogenesis. Methods: We examined the association of having both hay fever and asthma with colorectal cancer mortality among 1,023,191 participants in CPS-I, foll… Show more

“…Among them, 32 papers were excluded because of the following reasons: the study was not an original study (n = 5), the study was not a prospective cohort or nested case-control study (n = 14), the study did not report the association between allergic conditions and CRC risk/mortality (n = 8), or an RR (HR) estimate was not reported and could not be calculated (n = 5). Finally, a total of 14 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this meta-analysis 6, 8, 11–14, 1825 . Figure 1 shows the study selection process, whereas Table 1 indicates the characteristics of the included studies.

“…Allergic rhinitis was negatively associated with rectum cancer among Taiwanese patients, and the association was stronger for males than for females [ 48 ]. Combining the cohorts from the Cancer Prevention Study (CPS) I and II, Jacobs et al calculated a relative risk of 0.83 for colorectal cancer mortality when having both asthma and hay fever [ 70 ].…”
