Harvesting has variable effects on demographic rates and population growth across three dry forest tree species

Abstract: In order to manage forest ecosystems for conservation and human livelihoods, it is important to understand the effects of anthropogenic activities on plant populations of economic, cultural, and conservation concern (Grogan et al., 2014;Kaye et al., 2001). Harvesting and use of plant products, especially non-timber forest products (NTFPs), account for a large proportion of the livelihoods of people living adjacent to forests (Ticktin, 2005). Overexploitation of timber and NTFPs is a concern, as 40% of plant sp… Show more

“…The highest impact of ecological disturbance in these forests is found to be grazing followed by fuelwood extraction, forest fire and non‐timber forest product collection. In contrast, Neeraja et al (2022) show variable effects of harvesting on population growth in three species of trees in the dry forests in the Eastern Ghats. Aditya and Ganesh (2022) report high overlap in human and herbivorous mammal activity in the northern Eastern Ghats that needs to be taken into consideration when planning conservation programs.…”
