Hardware Implementation of Differential Oscillatory Neural Networks Using VO 2-Based Oscillators and Memristor-Bridge Circuits

Abstract: Oscillatory Neural Networks (ONNs) are currently arousing interest in the research community for their potential to implement very fast, ultra-low-power computing tasks by exploiting specific emerging technologies. From the architectural point of view, ONNs are based on the synchronization of oscillatory neurons in cognitive processing, as occurs in the human brain. As emerging technologies, VO2 and memristive devices show promising potential for the efficient implementation of ONNs. Abundant literature is now… Show more

“…Coupled oscillator networks have been successfully exploited in the field of pattern recognition (Kantner et al, 2015;Hölzel and Krischer, 2011). However, larger systems have not yet been successfully developed due to noise-stability problems and device constraints in the new class of compact oscillators based on VO 2 or NbO x , for example (Shamsi et al, 2021;D. Lee et al, 2018).…”

“…An example of solving the vertex coloring optimization problem, using a computational engine based on memristor ONN, is presented in [ 25 ]. ONN can be successfully applied to solving emerging problems in the field of pattern recognition, image and audio signal processing, and robot control, as well as for the development of neuromorphic systems [ 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ].…”

“…As a coupling component, a memristor can be used to interconnect the oscillators. Differential ONNs (DONNs) have recently been introduced that use differential oscillators, each providing one in-phase and one anti-phase signal [5]. Differential outputs allow a memristor-bridge synaptic circuit to be used to implement positive, negative, or zero weights [6].…”
