Haptically extended augmented prototyping

Abstract: This project presents a new display concept, which brings together Haptics, Augmented and Mixed Reality and Tangible Computing within the context of an intuitive conceptual design environment. The project extends the paradigm of Augmented Prototyping by allowing modelling of virtual geometry on the physical prototype, which can be touched by means of a haptic device. Wireless tracking of the physical prototype is achieved in three different ways by attaching to it a 'Speck', a tracker and Nintendo Wii Remote a… Show more

“…SAIBA's strong modularity may not be appropriate for interaction that is fine-grained or requires rich contextual information (Lee et al 2008). In particular, our system differs from the SAIBA framework (Zwiers et al 2011) so that our ECAs can more easily integrate cognitive functions across what would be separate modules in a SAIBA-compliant system.…”

“…Caruso and Re have developed an interactive AR system called 'Video See Through Head Mounted Display' for visualizing and interacting with virtual designed objects to be able to review and offer feedback to objects for further design improvement[79] (Figure 2.65). Dima et al presented a display concept which uses AR with haptic feedback that allows designing of virtual geometry[80]. Santos et al has proposed using digital tape in…”

“…In addition, a draw function can be implemented through which users can draw extra geometry. In [9] an early research on this process is presented, and the Virtual Showcase [3] that was mentioned in the literature review also allows the presentation of stereoscopic images overlaid on top of real objects. We envisage that this study will have numerous applications in museum research as well as learning.…”
