Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome: The First 100 US Cases

Abstract: In the spring of 1993, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) "emerged" in the southwestern United States, where a multiagency investigation led to the rapid description of this new clinical entity and its etiology. Analysis of the first 100 US cases identified showed that the disease was distributed in 21 states, had gone unrecognized since at least 1959, and had a distinct spring-early summer seasonality. Of the infected persons, 54% were male; 63% were Caucasian, 35% were Native American, and 2% were African A… Show more

“…However, Seoul virus has been detected among rat populations in port cities worldwide, including cities in the United States. 4,[10][11][12] In 2009, the first case of a domestically acquired Seoul virus infection was reported in Maryland in a patient who worked in an underground service tunnel where he might have had rodent contact. 5 In one study of wild rats trapped in Baltimore, nearly half the rats had detectable antibody against Seoul virus.…”

“…HPS is characterized by fever, myalgia, gastrointestinal symptoms, and headache, with subsequent characteristic cardiopulmonary dysfunction and a 40% to 60% case-fatality rate (3). Although the etiologic agent, Sin Nombre virus (SNV), causes clinical symptoms that appear different from those that Eurasian hantaviruses cause in hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, SNV shares many features with these Old World hantaviruses (4,5), including an association with a single primary rodent host (Peromyscus maniculatus [deer mouse] in the case of SNV), which acts as the natural reservoir (6).…”
