Commercial aviation pilots are an occupational group that work in particular conditions, with frequent schedule changes, shift work, unfavorable environmental conditions, etc. These circumstances can lead to fatigue, work overload (WO), and daytime sleepiness, factors that can affect their health and safety. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and the association between these parameters in a sample of Spanish commercial airline pilots. The Raw TLX, Fatigue Severity Scale, and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale questionnaires were administered in a sample of 283 participants. The relationships of the total scores between all the questionnaires were studied by the chi-square test and the risk scores (odds ratio) were calculated. Different models using multiple linear regression were carried out to evaluate the effects of WO, fatigue, and daytime sleepiness, among the total scores, age, and flight hours. Additionally, the internal consistency of each questionnaire was estimated. A total of 28.2% presented WO above the 75th percentile, with mental and temporal demand the dimensions with the greatest weight. A total of 18% of pilots presented fatigue, 15.8% moderate sleepiness, and 3.9% severe sleepiness. We observed an association among WO, fatigue, and daytime sleepiness, important factors related to pilot health and aviation safety.

Pseudo-pilots work in real-time simulations in air traffic control training and carry out an important task to ensure appropriate training for the trainee controllers. They are in constant communication with controllers during the training and are responsible for fulfilling the instructions given by the controllers. Unlike real operations, pseudo-pilots are required to monitor many aircraft simultaneously on the simulator’s radar screen and perform various interventions. This situation can be challenging, and the impact of such situations on their workload is usually neglected. In the literature, various studies have revealed the factors affecting controller workload; however, the factors affecting the workload of pseudo-pilots have not been emphasized. In this study, statistical analyses were carried out using the data obtained from real-time simulations and NASA-TLX surveys. As a result, the number of aircraft, controller performance, and the interruption duration were determined as the key factors that affect the overall workload of pseudo-pilots.

El presente trabajo de investigación tuvo como propósito desarrollar un modelo de programación lineal binaria para la asignación de trabajadores al resguardo de instalaciones en una universidad en caso de huelga. El objetivo del modelo desarrollado es minimizar la distancia total de traslado de los docentes a las diferentes instalaciones pertenecientes a la universidad. Algunas de las características que se consideraron para establecer ciertas condiciones en el desarrollo del modelo fueron la edad del docente, su sexo, los kilómetros de traslado y la capacidad para albergar a los profesores en cada instalación. El resultado generado por el modelo computacional implementado en LINGO arrojó que la asignación optima, al asignar un total de 596 docentes a las instalaciones consideradas, la proporción de mujeres en turnos peligrosos fue del 26.2%, con un rango de edades de 28 a 59 años, mientras que para los turnos no peligrosos los resultados fueron de 61.2% y un rango de 28 a 68 años.
