Handheld impedance biosensor system using engineered proteinaceous receptors

Abstract: We put forward an impedometric protein-based biosensor platform suitable for point-of-care diagnostics. A hand-held scale impedance reader system is described for the detection of corresponding physiochemical changes as the immobilized proteins bind to the analyte molecules in the proximity of the microfabricated electrodes. Specifically, we study the viability of this approach for glucose biosensing purposes using genetically engineered glucokinase as receptor proteins. The proposed reagent-less biosensor off… Show more

“…Other approaches to portable EIS include using the commercial Analog Devices (AD) integrated circuit (IC) impedance analyzer AD5933 (Ghafar-Zadeh et al 2010). This chip combines sine wave generation, ADC, basic impedance analysis and allows multi-sine functions with discrete Fourier transform processing.…”

“…Impedance sensing is already employed in clinical diagnosis such as in electrical impedance myography (Sanchez and Rutkove 2017), blood impedance analysis (Ghafar-Zadeh et al 2010) and electrical impedance tomography (Adler and Boyle 2017). Measuring impedances over more than one frequency is considered an advantage for certain applications, with commercially-available devices for microbiology (Ramirez et al 2009) and cervical screening (Leeson 2014).…”

“…Handheld biosensors are one of the most sought for analytical components to be added to the POC arsenal. Their field of applications ranges from classical glucometers to advanced devices for magnetic immunoassay tests [ 26 , 27 ]. A recently reported technique uses magnetic nanoparticles and immunoassay protocols to measure concentrations of target molecules [ 28 ].…”

“…A major advantage of using EIS technique is its ability to capture subtle electrochemical changes by optimizing input parameters. Impedance sensing has already paved its way into clinical entourage such as blood impedance analysis 18 , electrical impedance topography 19 and electrical impedance myography 20 .…”
