Hand hygiene and facemask use to prevent droplet-transmitted viral diseases during air travel: a systematic literature review

Abstract: Background Transmission of viral diseases (e.g., influenza A H1N1) via respiratory droplets takes place mainly in confined spaces, including in aircraft during commercial air travel. The adoption of hygiene measures may help to prevent disease spread aboard aircraft. This review summarizes the evidence on hand hygiene and the use of facemasks as viral disease prevention measures in aircraft. Methods A literature search was performed in the PubMed, … Show more

“…Owing to the magnitude of the COVID-19 pandemic, government support for the sector becomes essential [ 8 ]. Most individuals wear face masks as a consequence of government’s mandatory measures to prevent COVID-19 contagions [ 17 ]. Thus, public authorities should promote nature connectedness as an effective alternative to deal with the discomfort produced by wearing face masks.…”

“…Second, the magnitude, vaccination progress, health policies of the coronavirus pandemic and compliance with mask mandates vary worldwide, which probably influence frequency of mask use. Recommendations or dispositions for wearing face masks also vary across countries [ 17 , 27 ]. Thus, future research could replicate these results with representative samples from other nations and cultures.…”

“…The results showed that 91.48% of the medical post-graduates chose to strengthen their personal protection against COVID-19 and 86.34% chose to strengthen their personal hygiene. Previous studies have demonstrated that the hands are an important medium for virus transmission, and hand hygiene is thus the simplest and most cost-effective measure for reducing the occurrence of hospital infection (22). Hand hygiene is also listed in the guidelines issued by China to protect the public against COVID-19 as one of the important measures that can be taken to prevent COVID-19 infection (23).…”

“…The spread of COVID-19 has significantly reduced mobility during periods of lockdowns and severe travel restrictions ( Gössling et al, 2020 , Wielechowski et al, 2020 , Nguyen-Phuoc et al, 2022b ). Additionally, governments have promoted infection prevention measures such as good hand hygiene and face mask use in public areas or during transit ( Atangana and Atangana, 2020 , De Angelis et al, 2021 ). COVID-19 has also influenced the perception of risk in the population, which, together with official advice and guidelines, have increased self-protective behaviours against COVID-19 among different groups of the population ( Cori et al, 2020 , Bonell et al, 2020 , Nguyen-Phuoc et al, 2022a ).…”
