Hand and wrist research productivity in journals with high impact factors: a 20 year analysis

Abstract: Bibliometric analyses, which study trends in research productivity, have not previously been applied to hand and wrist research. This study analyses temporal and geographic trends in hand and wrist research from 1988 to 2007. Original research articles were collected from seven English language journals selected on the basis of impact factor. Research production and quality (level of evidence) were determined by country and global region. Linear regression analysis was used to investigate trends. No significan… Show more

“…However, there is a wide variation in research output among nations. Global and regional bibliometric analyses of English language journals have been done in various areas of research 11 12 13 14) . Many previous bibliometric analyses have looked at the overall orthopedic literature, regardless of research fields 9 15 16 17 18 19 20 21) .…”

“…Therefore, it is a necessity that published research aims to address knowledge gaps in the field and contains highqual ity evidence. 2,11,13 In this study we identified the three most commonly published topic domains in a 5year study period. These three topics-DR, FT, and CT-represented 27% of all the published articles with more than 3,000 published pages.…”

“…Encouragingly, there has been a relative increase in level I evidence, though it still remains well below the volume of level IV evidence production. 18 The lack of research and adequate funding allocation to musculoskeletal conditions lead to the launch of the WHO Bone and Joint Decade 2000–2010 to try to increase awareness and funding for musculoskeletal conditions. We propose that there remains, beyond the Bone and Joint Decade, an urgent need to conduct high quality research, particularly randomised control trials to determine the best treatment options for common hand conditions.…”
