Resumo -É essencial a rotação de mecanismos de ação de herbicidas no manejo de plantas daninhas resistentes ao glyphosate, neste contexto o uso de herbicidas inibidores da enzima ALS em associação pode auxiliar no controle. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia de sulfometuron, chlorimuron e outras sulfonilureias, isolados ou em associação com glyphosate, no controle de amendoim-bravo, corda-de-viola e picão-preto. Foram realizados três experimentos em casa-de-vegetação, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos corresponderam aos herbicidas aplicados em pós-emergência das plantas daninhas mais a testemunha (sem aplicação), quando estas estavam com duas folhas completamente desenvolvidas. Os resultados evidenciaram que sulfometuron (15 g ha -1 i.a.) + chlorimuron (20 g ha -1 i.a.) + glyphosate (960 g ha -1 e.a.), foi eficaz no controle de amendoim-bravo, e o tratamento halosulfuron (80 g ha -1 i.a.) + glyphosate (960 g ha -1 e.a.) propiciou controle de 76,25%. A aplicação de sulfometuron (15 g ha -1 i.a.) + chlorimuron (20 g ha -1 i.a.) + glyphosate (960 g ha -1 e.a.), foi eficaz no controle de corda-de-viola. Todos os tratamentos herbicidas foram eficazes no controle em pós-emergência de picão-preto. The aim of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of sulfometuron, chlorimuron and other sulfonylureas, isolated and in associations in the control of Wild Poinsettia, Morning Glory and Greater Beggarticks. Three greenhouse experiments were carried out in a completely randomized design with four replications. The treatments corresponded to the herbicides applied in post-emergence of the weed plus the control (without application), when these were with two completely developed leaves. The results showed that sulfometuron (15 g ha -1 a.i.) + chlorimuron (20 g ha -1 a.i.) + glyphosate (960 g ha -1 a.e.) was effective in the control of Wild Poinsettia, and halosulfuron treatment (80 g ha -1 a.i.) + glyphosate (960 g ha -1 a.e.) provided a control of 76.25%. The application of sulfometuron (15 g ha -1 a.i.) + chlorimuron (20 g ha -1 a.i.) + glyphosate (960 g ha -1 a.e.) was effective in the control of Morning Glory. All herbicides treatments were effective in the post-emergence control of Greater Beggarticks.

The potential indirect effects of soil applied herbicides have not been adequately explored. The objective of this study was to explore the potential and relative importance of the indirect effects of halosulfuron applied preplant incorporated (PPI) on several weed species common in white bean fields in Ontario. Halosulfuron applied PPI at 35 g ai ha −1 delayed common lambsquarters and wild mustard emergence and reduced their densities over 70%. It did not delay green foxtail emergence, but the density was decreased over 30%. Indirect herbicidal effects such as delayed emergence timing may be important for weed management in non-competitive crops such as white bean. Based on these results, the indirect effects of soil applied herbicides are real and are potentially important for providing additional prevention of yield loss in field crops. This may be particularly important for relatively non-competitive crops such as white bean and for reducing weed seed return to the seedbank.

Weed management in azuki bean with preplant incorporated herbicides

There are only two soil‐applied herbicides, pendimethalin and imazethapyr, registered for weed management in azuki bean production in Ontario, Canada. Three experiments were completed in Ontario over three consecutive years (2017, 2018, and 2019) to develop weed management programs in azuki bean with various preplant incorporated (PPI) herbicides. There was up to 6% azuki bean injury with the herbicide treatments evaluated. Pendimethalin + S‐metolachlor controlled redroot pigweed, common lambsquarters, barnyard grass, and green foxtail at ≥99% but provided poor control of common ragweed and wild mustard. The two‐way mixtures of pendimethalin + imazethapyr and pendimethalin + halosulfuron, and the three‐way mixtures of pendimethalin + S‐metolachlor + imazethapyr and pendimethalin + S‐metolachlor + halosulfuron controlled redroot pigweed, common lambsquarters, wild mustard, barnyard grass, and green foxtail at ≥99% and common ragweed at >73%. Common ragweed control was consistently higher with tankmixes that contained halosulfuron. Metribuzin controlled redroot pigweed, common ragweed, common lambsquarters, wild mustard, barnyard grass, and green foxtail at >93%, 88%, 99%, 97%, 68%, and 50%, respectively. Weed density and aboveground biomass reductions were similar to those of weed control. Weed presence reduced azuki bean yield by 83%. Reduced weed presence with the herbicide treatments assessed resulted in azuki bean yield that was similar to that of the weed‐free control with the exception of pendimethalin, halosulfuron, and metribuzin (low rate); weed interference with the aforementioned herbicides decreased azuki bean yield by 50%, 56%, and 44%, respectively. Based on these results, pendimethalin, S‐metolachlor, halosulfuron, and imazethapyr applied PPI, applied alone, or in a two‐way or three‐way tankmixture can be used safely for the control of common annual grass and broadleaf weeds in Ontario, Canada.
