We address a problem of area protection in graph-based scenarios with multiple agents. The problem consists of two adversarial teams of agents that move in an undirected graph shared by both teams. Agents are placed in vertices of the graph; at most one agent can occupy a vertex; and they can move into adjacent vertices in a conflict free way. Teams have asymmetric goals: the aim of one team -attackers -is to invade into given area while the aim of the opponent team -defenders -is to protect the area from being entered by attackers by occupying selected vertices. We study strategies for allocating vertices to be occupied by the team of defenders to block attacking agents. We show that the decision version of the problem of area protection is PSPACE-hard under the assumption that agents can allocate their target vertices multiple times. Further we develop various on-line vertex-allocation strategies for the defender team in a simplified variant of the problem with single stage vertex allocation and evaluated their performance in multiple benchmarks. The success of a strategy is heavily dependent on the type of the instance, and so one of the contributions of this work is that we identify suitable vertex-allocation strategies for diverse instance types. In particular, we introduce a simulation-based method that identifies and tries to capture bottlenecks in the graph, that are frequently used by the attackers. Our experimental evaluation suggests that this method often allows a successful defense even in instances where the attackers significantly outnumber the defenders.

Persistent Surveillance With Energy-Constrained UAVs and Mobile Charging Stations

We address the problem of achieving persistent surveillance over an environment by using energy-constrained unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are supported by unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) serving as mobile charging stations. Specifically, we plan the trajectories of all vehicles and the charging schedule of UAVs to minimize the long-term maximum age, where age is defined as the time between two consecutive visits to regions of interest in a partitioned environment. We introduce a scalable planning strategy based on 1) creating UAV-UGV teams, 2) decomposing the environment into optimal partitions that can be covered by any of the teams in a single fuel cycle, 3) uniformly distributing the teams over a cyclic path traversing those partitions, and 4) having the UAVs in each team cover their current partition and be transported to the next partition while being recharged by the UGV. We show some results related to the safety and performance of the proposed strategy.

This study briefly attempts to uncover the dynamics that had shaped Jewish journalism in Hebrew Language by tracking archives of Historical Jewish Press the catalogues of Israel National Library. The fact that the Jewish life was stuck in Europe and the existence of oppression from the official authorities has been reminded them of the importance of the solidarity networks among the Jews. The priority of solidarity and networking in the collective memory resulted into emergence and distribution of written publications which are driven by the Enlightenment movement in Europe. This development led to the spread of daily news, cultural developments, and global events among the Jews through newspapers, with the contribution of the development of the modern press. Assessing the shift of the hub of Jewish Press from Diaspora to Israel is important in revealing the discourse, strategy, and practical change among the Jews.
