Hair growth effect of minoxidil

Abstract: The length and size of hair are depend on the anagen term in its hair cycle. It has been reported that the some cell growth factors, such as VEGF, FGF-5S, IGF-1 and KGF, induce the proliferation of cells in the matrix, dermal papilla and dermal papillary vascular system and increase the amount of extra cellular matrix in dermal papilla and then maintain follicles in the anagen phase. On the other hand, negative factors, like FGF-5, thrombospondin, or still unknown ones, terminate the anagen phase. If the negat… Show more

“…It has been reported that IGF-1, VEGF, fibroblast growth factor 5, and fibroblast growth factor 7 induce proliferation of cells in the matrix, dermal papilla, and dermal papillary vascular system and increase the amount of extracellular matrix in dermal papilla [23]. These factors also maintain follicles in the anagen phase [23], [24], whereas TGF-ÎČ1 evokes apoptosis of matrix cells and shifts the follicles from anagen to catagen [24], [25]. IGF-1 is recognized as a potent stimulator of HF growth and an important physiologic regulator of the hair growth cycle [23], [26], [27].…”

“…Minoxidil (2,4‐diamino‐6‐piperidinipyrimidine‐3‐oxyde) is an antihypertensive vasodilator medication, used topically to treat hair loss in men and women . Introduced in 1970 as an anti‐hypertensive agent, an increase in hair growth (hypertrichosis) was observed as a side effect of minoxidil .…”

“…It has been reported that growth factors, such as VEGF, FGF-5S, IGF-1 and KGF, induce the proliferation of cells in the matrix, the DPC and dermal papillary vascular system, increase the amount of extracellular matrix in DPC, and then maintain follicles in the anagen phase (16). IGF-1 is a paracrine growth factor in many organs and is expressed by mesenchymal cell of the dermis layer and the dermal papilla (17).…”
