Haematological and biochemical reference intervals for farmed channel catfish

Abstract: The reference intervals for biochemical variables and red blood cell indices of healthy intensively bred channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus were determined. The blood variables were determined using standardized clinical methods. The reference intervals (25th and 75th percentiles) were established using a non-parametric method. Reference intervals for plasma glucose, serum total protein, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride concentration, primary and secondary red blood cell indices were establishe… Show more

“…A rearing system for the maximization of fish productivity is the aim of fishery management programmers, and an evaluation of the physiological status of the fish during rearing is necessary to achieve this. Serum biochemical data are of immense importance in monitoring the health status of aquatic organisms, especially in fisheries management programs [7]- [9]. Table 1).…”

“…Blood serum biochemical data are used routinely in health care of humans and domestic animals. Blood biochemical evaluations are also gradually becoming a routine practice for determining health status in fish [7]- [9], and only a few normal values for small number biochemical parameters have been established for some teleosts [10].…”

“…The study of haematological parameters in fish is an important instrument for the evaluation of their physiological status, immune system and possible pathological changes (Ballarin et al 2004;Tavares-Dias and Moraes 2004;Wells et al 2005;Tavares-Dias and Moraes 2007;Micale et al 2010). The number and size of red blood cells, haematocrit and haemoglobin concentrations, all indicate the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood (Tavares-Dias and Moraes 2004; Wells et al 2005); together with white blood cells, these parameters are also indicators of toxicity and could be potentially employed for environmental monitoring and toxicity studies in aquatic animals (Sancho et al 2000;Barcellos et al 2003).…”

“…Essas fornecem informações relevantes sobre as condições fisiológicas e o estado de saúde de cada animal em particular ou de sua população, as quais são de suma importância para os peixes criados em ambiente confinado (Tavares-Dias; Moraes, 2007).…”
