Haemangiopericytoma of the sigmoid mesentery

Abstract: Haemangiopericytoma is a rare, vascular soft tissue tumour originating from the pericytes surrounding capillaries. We report a case of haemangiopericytoma in the sigmoid mesocolon and are aware of only one previously case. A 61-year-old man was referred with a left iliac fossa mass. At operation, a 10-cm diameter mass was found to be arising from the sigmoid mesentery (Fig. 1). The mass did not involve the bowel wall and there was no clinical evidence of metastatic disease. A sigmoid colectomy with primary ana… Show more

“…Malignant nature is generally conveyed by a large tumor size (> 50 mm) [5,10,12] high cellularity, nuclear pleomorphism [11], mitotic activity (> 4 per 10 HPF), anaplasia, necrosis and hemorrhage [9,10]. In our case, the presence of nuclear polymorphism with hypercellularity, increased mitotic activity, tumor size, as well as a focally infiltrative interface are consistant with a malignant nature for this tumor.…”

“…Treatment consists in complete surgical resection. Considering that recurrence and metastases are common following surgery, long term follow up is necessary [13,5]. There is currently an unmet medical need regarding adjuvant treatment to try to improve long-term survival.…”

“…Hemangiopericytomas are highly vascularized large tumors, which arise from pericytes, and are found more commonly in the abdomen or pelvis [ 7 12 ]. There are cases which describe tumors in the mediastinum, esophagus, and femur.…”
