Habitat use and demography of Mus musculus in a rural landscape of Argentina

Abstract: The main goal of the paper was to determine the habitat distribution of the house mouse (Mus musculus) within a rural landscape of Buenos Aires province, Argentina. We also studied the seasonal variation in abundance and reproductive activity. The habitats studied were poultry farms, human houses in a small village, cropfields, pastures, cropfield and pasture edges, riparian habitats (streams), railway embankments and woodlots. We captured 817 M. musculus and 690 individuals of 5 native rodent species. M. musc… Show more

“…The rodent community in the Pampean region has been widely described (Busch & Kravetz, 1992a, 1992bBusch, Alvarez, Cittadino, & Kravetz, 1997;Dadon, & Hodara, 2000;Busch et al, 2001;Hodara, Busch, Kittlen, & Kravetz, 2001;Hodara & Busch, 2006;Busch & Hodara, 2010;Fraschina, León, & Busch, 2012;León, Fraschina, Guidobono, & Busch, 2013), but mainly in crop fields, their borders, and poultry farms. Other habitats that support species with more specific requirements, such as railway embankments, woodlots and riparian habitats, have been poorly sampled.…”

“…competitive coexistence (Steward and Levin 1973;Brown 1989;Shenbrot et al 1991;León et al 2013). Competitive coexistence of multiple species is likely a result of temporal and/or spatial variability in resource abundance, density-dependent resource consumption rate, as well as natality and mortality rates (Brown 1989;Kneitel and Chase 2004).…”

“…It was observed that M. musculus on the farms is reproductively active throughout the year, achieves sexual maturity with a month and a half of age, and produces litters with an average of five and seven pups (Miño, 2003). On the other hand, it may also move from other farms, probably using riparian habitats as corridors (León et al, , 2013. More recently, a study on bromadiolone resistance reported that 8% of M. musculus from these farms were resistant (Guidobono et al, 2010).…”
