Les Ayt Merghad constituent une tribu de ksouriens transhumants ou « anciens nomades » (Skounti, p. 1), de langue amazighe, dont les parcours chevauchent les massifs orientaux de l'Atlas marocain, depuis les environs de l'Agelmam Sidi 'Ali et les piémonts nord du Jbel 'Ayyachi, jusqu'aux oasis présahariens entre Tinejdad et Rachidia, alors que le coeur de leur pays se situe dans les hautes vallées du Haut-Atlas oriental au nord de Tineghir. À l'origine, les Ayt Merghad faisaient partie des Ayt 'Atta*, entité dominante du Sud-Est marocain. Ils se seraient brouillés avec eux aux alentours de 1645, peu « après le combat de Tazrout » (Henry 1937-1, p. 19). Puis, ils auraient adhérés du XVII e au XX e siècle à la puissante confédération Ayt Yafelman, aux côtés de leurs frères Ayt Izdeg, Ayt Hadiddou, Ayt Yahya, et (plus tard) Ayt 'Ayyach et arabes Sebbah. De tous les groupements du Sud-Est marocain, ils ont été les derniers à abandonner la lutte contre le colonialisme français ; ce sont sans doute ceux, aussi, qui sont restés les plus attachés à leurs traditions, les plus sensibles à leur amazighité/ berbérité (timuzγa). Historique On signale en premier les Ayt Merghad, groupement de pasteurs nomades, comptant 500 a 600 familles vivant dans l'Imedghas au XV e siècle (Henry 1937-2, p. 2). On leur reconnaissait alors trois segments majeurs : les Ayt Mesri, les Ayt Youb, les Irbiben. Par la suite un segment nomade, les Ayt Ayssa Izem, comptant 300 familles environ, prendra chez eux une grand importance. Les versions diffèrent quant à l'émergence de l'alliance Ayt Yafelman, dont les Ayt Merghad constituaient une des principales composantes. Pour les uns (De la Chapelle, p. 42 ; Peyron 1984, p. 121), bien que l'évènement soit difficile à dater avec précision, elle aurait résulté d'une lettre de Moulay Ismaïl aux šurfa des Ayt Sidi Bou Yaâqoub, enjoignant ces derniers à inciter les tribus locales à se regrouper face à la poussée des Ayt Atta ; évènement se situant à la fin du XVII e siècle. Pour d'autres (Henry 1937-1, p. 19), la confédération Ayt Yafelman existait déjà en 1645. Mieux encore, cela ne fait Merghad, Ayt (Ayt Merγad)
