Habitat destruction and poaching threaten the Sumatran tiger in Kerinci Seblat National Park, Sumatra

Abstract: The Sumatran tiger, categorized as Critically of TPCU patrol size from the number of arrests, and chainsaw and snare trap confiscations per patrol. The Endangered on the 2002 IUCN Red List, is threatened by poaching for domestic and international markets, by success of forest patrols increased with the number of TPCU staC per patrol. We looked at general law enforce-prey depletion from human hunting and by habitat loss from illegal and commercial logging, oil palm pro-ment for KSNP, which appeared to be inadeq… Show more

“…Many countries have legislation that legally protects carnivores such as wolves (Canis lupis) in the United States of America and India [25], but killings continue, making protected carnivore persecution an issue of global conservation concern [23,26]. Illegal carnivore persecution has been measured indirectly in different ways [27,28], but such indirect methods tell us little about the characteristics of the people persecuting carnivores making it difficult to target interventions aimed at reducing carnivore killing.…”

“…The Sumatran tiger is exposed to numerous threats which, combined with its low population numbers, has resulted in its classification as critically endangered on the IUCN red list (Cat Specialist Group 1996). The major threats to its survival are habitat destruction, excessive poaching for illegal trade (Nowell andJackson 1996, Morell 2007), prey depletion, and persecution by humans because of the threat to livestock (Linkie et al 2003, Nyhus and Tilson 2004. Linkie et al (2006) studied the occurrence and population viability of the tigers in the Kerinci Seblat National Park, Sumatra.…”

“…However, species with large home ranges or migratory habits present broader challenges, because their habitat requirements often extend beyond the boundaries of protected areas (Lambeck, 1997;Caro and O'Doherty, 1999;Sanderson et al, 2001). Principal threats to tigers both within and beyond protected areas include direct hunting but also declines in their prey, exacerbated by habitat loss associated with agricultural, urban and infrastructure expansion, and extractive resource consumption such as logging and mining (Linkie et al, 2003;O'Brien et al, 2003;Dinerstein et al, 2007).…”
