Habitat associations of dolphinfish larvae in the Gulf of Mexico

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the northern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) as essential habitat of common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) and pompano dolphinfish (C. equiselis) during early life and to characterize conditions in which they were found. Eight ichthyoplankton surveys were conducted during the summer months from 2007 to 2010 in northern Gulf waters off Texas and Louisiana (26–28°N, 87–93°W), during which 1145 dolphinfish larvae were collected. C. hippurus, the dominant dolphinfish s… Show more

“…Given their great capacity for large-scale migration (Merten et al 2014a), Dolphinfish have a high potential to integrate contaminants across the Gulf of Mexico. These findings suggest a need for more information on the feeding biology of these fish in the Gulf of Mexico, as this stock is potentially recovering from a poor 2010 cohort (Kitchens and Rooker 2014).…”

“…The Dolphinfish index from the optimal model showed two 7‐year cycles with peaks in 2007 and 2014 (Figure ), and the last year (2015) showed a concerning decline. There is no information to explain the causes of these fluctuations, but they may be associated in part with the influences of environmental factors on recruitment (as in the Gulf of Mexico; Kitchens and Rooker ) and the exceptionally fast growth rates and early maturation nature of the fish (Oxenford ; Schwenke and Buckel ; Chang et al. ).…”

“…Many of the studies that have examined the influence of abiotic factors on the distribution and abundance of marine fishes in the GoM have focused on larval life stages (Kitchens & Rooker, ; Randall, Smith, Cowan, & Rooker, ; Rooker et al., ). Larvae exhibit limited mobility and are easy to collect in towed nets.…”

“…Caranx hippos and T. lathami displayed similar spatial arrangement in RDA plots for both post-larval and juvenile life stages, with higher abundances at higher SST (Figure 11a and b). (Kitchens & Rooker, 2014;Randall, Smith, Cowan, & Rooker, 2015;Rooker et al, 2012). Larvae exhibit limited mobility and are easy to collect in towed nets.…”
