This study investigated the optimal synthesis conditions for the production of Raffia Palm Shell Activated Carbon (RPSAC) using phosphoric acid as activation agent. The optimization of the synthesis conditions was achieved using the Central Composite Design (CDD) in Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The influences of impregnation ratio, temperature, time and concentration on the specific surface area and yield of RPSAC were evaluated. Based on the CDD, 2FI and quadratic models were developed for the two responses. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was utilized to determine the significant factors and factor interactions for each response. All process variables except impregnation ratio were observed to significantly influence the quality of RPSAC. The optimal synthesis conditions for RPSAC were; 523.68 °C, 76.91%, and 103.83 min for temperature, concentration, and time respectively which provided a specific surface area and yield of 1762.92 m 2 /g and 77.98 % respectively. The Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) analyses proved that RPSAC had a meso-micro-porous morphology with high carbon and oxygen contents. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed the abundance of hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxylic groups on RPSAC. X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that RPSAC composed mainly of amorphous and disordered microcrystalline phases ascribed to the high quartz content of the precursor. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area, average pore diameter, total pore volume, and pH pzc of RPSAC were obtained as 456.10 m 2 /g, 0.25 cm 3 /g, 2.13 nm and 2.10 correspondingly. Thus, RSM was found to be an excellent and desirable tool for optimal synthesis of RPSAC that possess high surface area and porosity suitable for application in the adsorption of both large and small molecular sized pollutants such as dyes and fluoride in real and aqueous solution.

In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) approach using central composite design (CCD) was investigated to develop mathematical model and to optimize the effects of pH, adsorbent amount and temperature related to the hexavalent chromium removal by biosorption on peanut shells (PSh). The highest removal percentage of 30.28% was found by the predicted model under the optimum conditions (pH of 2.11, 0.73 g of PSh and 37.2 °C) for a 100 mg/L initial Cr (VI) concentration, which was very near to the experimental value (29.92%). The PSh was characterized by SEM, EDX, FTIR, BET, XRD analysis. Moreover, Langmuir isotherm fitted well (R2 = 0.992) with the experimental data, and the maximum adsorption capacity was discovered to be 2.48 and 3.49 mg/g respectively at 25 and 45 °C. Kinetic data was well foreseen by pseudo second order. Thermodynamic study depicted that biosorption of Cr(VI) onto PSh was spontaneous and endothermic. Regeneration of the PSh using NaOH showed a loss <5% in the Cr (VI) removal efficiency till three recycle runs. In summary, the Cr (VI) removal onto economic, sensitive and selective biosorbent (PSh) optimized using CCD to study biosorption behaviors.

Background The need for environmental protection and remediation processes has been an increasing global concern. Pesticides are used as biological agents, disinfectants, antimicrobials, and also in a mixture of some chemical substances. Their modes of application are through selective dispensing and attenuation processes which act upon any pest that compete with the production, processing, and storage of foods and also in agricultural commodes. The pests might comprise weeds, insects, birds, fish, and microbes. Main body Pesticides are commonly found in water surface, landfill leachate, ground water, and wastewater as pollutant. An overview of recently studied adsorption processes for the pesticide elimination from polluted water has been reported in this study utilizing activated carbon, clay materials, biomass materials, metal organic frame work, graphene, and carbon-based materials as well as agricultural wastes as adsorbents. The risk assessment and cost analysis of adsorbents were also provided. Conclusion Evidences from literature recommend modified adsorbent and composite materials to have a prospective use in pesticide removal from wastewater. The adsorption data obtained fitted into different isotherm and kinetic models and also the thermodynamic aspect have been discussed. Graphical abstract
