Gynoecium and fruit development in Arabidopsis

Abstract: Flowering plants produce flowers and one of the most complex floral structures is the pistil or the gynoecium. All the floral organs differentiate from the floral meristem. Various reviews exist on molecular mechanisms controlling reproductive development, but most focus on a short time window and there has been no recent review on the complete developmental time frame of gynoecium and fruit formation. Here, we highlight recent discoveries, including the players, interactions and mechanisms that govern gynoeci… Show more

“…Style and stigma form towards the end of the patterning phase of gynoecium development, thus a transition in symmetry, from bilateral to radial, takes place during a specific developmental window and at the distal-apical end of the growing organ. This fascinating process is controlled by key TFs and hormonal dynamic cross-talks [54]. The phytohormone auxinwhose levels are finely regulated to orchestrate plant development [55] plays a central role in the bilateral-to-radial gynoecium symmetry transition.…”

“…Ці зміни детально вивчаються переважно у рослин з їстівними плодами та у модельних видів (Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. тощо) в дослідженнях генетичної регуляції морфогенезу (Eldridge et al, 2016;Herrera-Ubaldo, de Folter, 2022).…”

“…Подібні процеси забезпечують і "механізм розкривання" плоду, який може реалізовуватись за участі різних гістологічних структур (Roth, 1977;Bobrov et al, 2009). Питання генетичної регуляції морфогенезу плоду та забезпечення його розкривання добре вивчено лише на прикладі Arabidopsis thaliana та декількох інших модельних видів (Ferrándiz et al, 1999;Ferrándiz, 2002;Robles, Pelaz, 2005;Arnaud et al, 2010;Ferrándiz, Fourquin, 2014;Herrera-Ubaldo, de Folter, 2022).…”

“…In angiosperm fruit, locules are the chamber surrounding the pericarp that contains the seeds. Locules are derived from the fusion of carpels, the innermost whorls of a flower and the female reproductive structure (Herrera‐Ubaldo & de Folter, 2022 ). During Brassicaceae flower development, carpels fuse into a cylindrical gynoecium separated by thin septa that form locules.…”
