Gynecologic amyloidosis

Abstract: Amyloidosis is a generalized metabolic disorder characterized by deposition of insoluble protein in the extracellular space of various organs. We have treated a woman presenting with menorrhagia and anemia, who was subsequently diagnosed as having systemic amyloidosis. This represents the first known documentation of amyloid involvement of the female reproductive tract.

“…Currently, there is no effective treatment for prevention of fibrillogenesis or mobilisation of established amyloid deposits 1 . Logically, the treatment is primarily aimed at the underlying predisposing condition to prevent overproduction of the precursor proteins or subsequent tissue deposition 2,4 …”

“…Cases of amyloidosis affecting the female genital tract have been described before and have been associated with menorrhagia 2–4 . Postmenopausal bleeding has also been associated with isolated amyloid deposition to the uterine cervix 5 .…”

“…Postmenopausal bleeding has also been associated with isolated amyloid deposition to the uterine cervix 5 . Massive amyloidosis affecting the complete uterus, tubes and ovaries has been reported in a surgical specimen obtained at hysterectomy, but was not associated with postmenopausal bleeding 3 . Bleeding diathesis in amyloidosis is most likely caused by increased fragility and impaired contractility of blood vessels due to deposition of amyloid underneath the endothelium 6 .…”

“…Some of these patients also suffer from skin lesions and arthritis. Amyloidosis may complicate up to 2 5 % of FMF patients [ 1 ] and in these patients several kinships with autosomal dominant in heritance were reported [2], [10] et al [12] Pfanner [11] and Levin [13] uterus, tubes and ovaries was also reported [4]. During pregnancy, FMF bouts usually lessen [5,6], However, a 30% fetal wastage was reported [5].…”
