Successful Full-Term Pregnancy in Familial Mediterranean Fever Complicated with Amyloidosis: Case Report and Review of the Literature

Abstract: Pregnancy during familial Mediterranean fever complicated with amyloidosis and severe nephrotic syndrome is rare and may cause several maternal and fetal complications. Asymmetrical intrauterine growth retardation, superimposed pre-eclampsia, thromboembolic phenomena, resistant anemia and renal failure only partially represent the possible complications. A successful outcome of a full-term pregnancy is presented and the efficiency of colchicine, a high protein diet, acetylsalicylic acid and dipyridamole is dis… Show more

“…The haemoglobin should be maintained above 10 g/dL during gestation. 16,17 The use of leucocyte-depleted or bedside filtered red blood cell concentrate are effective in b thalassaemia patients in preventing febrile non-haemolytic transfusion reactions, cytomegalovirus infections, and reducing the immunomodulatory effect of transfusions. 18 Our patient required an increased frequency of blood transfusion during pregnancy to maintain her Hb > 10 g/dL and heart failure did not occur following transfusion therapy.…”

“…Some authors have suggested a higher risk of growth restriction, 43 although larger studies have not born this out. 43,45,46,51 At present, there is no indication for additional growth scans or antenatal monitoring unless other clinical issues arise. Data regarding preeclampsia and FMF are sparse.…”
