“…The increase of Bacteroidaceae in the patients with depression and anxiety is consistent with a previous study that mice monocolonized with Bacteroides fragilis, which could also produce GABA [20], display de cits in serum serotonin [19]. Ruminococcus could predict serum serotonin and cortisol levels [30], and is signi cantly associated with a depression indicator [31] and IBD [32] and gut in ammation [33]. Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae, which accounted for 42.62% of the identi ed gut microbiota, could produce butyric acid, a subtype of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).…”

“…Probiotic bacteria may exert healthpromoting effects through various mechanisms that may be strainspecific (e.g., lactic acid bacteria) or widespread across a diversity of strains, including normalization of perturbed microbiota, inhibition of potential pathogens, production of useful metabolites or enzymes, and immunomodulation (Hill et al, 2014). Trials of probiotics have reported to improve symptoms of depression and psychological distress in patients with major depression (Akkasheh et al, 2016;Chahwan et al, 2019), multiple sclerosis (Kouchaki et al, 2017), chronic fatigue syndrome (Rao et al, 2009), and irritable bowel syndrome (Pinto-Sanchez et al, 2017). However, the findings are far from conclusive and there is very limited evidence for the efficacy of probiotic or prebiotic interventions on changing microbial composition in SMI (Okubo et al, 2019).…”

“…The selection process eventually yielded 23 studies to be included in the review process. “…The studies were published in several countries all over the world; however, they were mostly from the United States (N = 4) (17.4%). (Hilimire et al, 2015;Messaoudi et al, 2011;Rao et al, 2009;Tillisch et al, 2013;3) Concerning the period of publication, 11 studies (47.8%) were published between 2011 and 2015 (Akkasheh et al, 2016;Begtrup et al, 2013;Feher et al, 2014;Hilimire et al, 2015;Lorenzo-ZĂșñiga et al, 2014;Malaguarnera et al, 2012;Shinkai et al, 2013;Steenbergen et al, 2015;Stevenson et al, 2014;Tillisch et al, 2013;Vaghef-Mehrabany et al, 2014), 6 in the 2016-2019 period (Chahwan et al, 2019;Kato-Kataoka et al, 2016;Lyra et al, 2016;Östlund-Lagerström et al, 2016;Pinto-Sanchez et al, 2017;Romijn et al, 2017), 4 between 2006 and 2010 (Benton et al, 2007;Guyonnet et al, 2007;Messaoudi et al, 2011;Rao et al, 2009), and 2 before 2005.
