Gustatory dysfunction in relation to circumvallate papilla’s taste buds structure upon unilateral maxillary molar extraction in Wistar rats: an in vivo study

Abstract: Background: The interaction between taste sensation and dentoalveolar innervation is still under research.  teeth loss can alter taste thresholds in humans, but the underlying mechanisms are still obscure. This study investigated the effect of unilateral maxillary molars extraction on the structure of circumvallate papilla in rats. Methods: Thirty-two male Wister rats, aged 3-4 months were randomly distributed into four groups (one control and 3 experimental ) each including 8 animals. The rats were euthanized… Show more

“…We selected circumvallate papilla as an indicator of oral mucosal changes with gamma radiation. Moreover, there is an opportunity to evaluate the taste bud reaction as circumvallate papillae gathering numerous taste buds in one localized region ( Mostafa et al, 2019 ) .…”

“…After sacrificing the rats, the tongues were excised free. The circumvallate papilla (CVP) is found most posteriorly in the middle of the anterior two-thirds of the tongue, the location of the CVP in the tongue was identified, and then the tissue specimen was isolated by two oblique cuts posteriorly and a cut anterior to the papilla (8) .…”

“…Sin embargo, los déficits gustativos que siguen a la exodoncia de otras piezas dentales (molares superiores, incisivos, etc.) o tratamientos de conducto radicular no pueden explicarse por el daño del nervio cuerda del tímpano o glosofaríngeo, ya que las fibras nerviosas de estos nervios no inervan ni atraviesan el sitio quirúrgico anterior (10)(11)(12).…”
