Guidelines for radioiodinated MIBG scintigraphy in children

Abstract: These guidelines on the use of radioiodinated (99m)Tc-MIBG scintigraphy in children, which summarise the views of the Paediatric Committee of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine, provide a framework which may prove helpful to nuclear medicine teams in daily practice. They have been influenced by the conclusions of the "Consensus Guidelines for MIBG Scintigraphy" (Paris, November 6, 1997) of the European Neuroblastoma Group and by those of the Oncological Committee of the French Society of Nuclear Medi… Show more

“…18 F-FDOPA PET was well tolerated in children with neuroblastic tumors. The 90-min interval between 18 F-FDOPA injection and PET scanning was much shorter than the standard 24-h interval for 123 I-MIBG scans (26) and allowed a single visit of the patient. 18 F-FDOPA PET clearly visualized primary and metastatic neuroblastic tumors ( Fig.…”

“…Thyroid blockade for 123 I-mIBG scans can be achieved using aqueous iodine solution, oral potassium iodide (100 mg adult or 2 mg kg -1 children) or potassium iodate commencing 2 -24 h before radiopharmaceutical injection and continuing for 1 day after, in accordance with local protocols or the European guidelines (Olivier et al, 2003). If a patient is allergic to iodine, oral potassium perchlorate may be substituted, given three times daily starting 2 -24 h before and continuing for 2 days after, at a dose of 8 mg kg -1 (400 mg for adult).…”
