Guidelines for quality control of commercially produced natural enemies.

Abstract: Lack of quality control procedures during the mass production of natural enemies may lead to failures in biological pest control. An example is presented of deteriorating efficiency of a natural enemy before quality control was applied and the measures that were taken to restore quality. Although some producers of beneficial insects and mites have applied quality control in one form or another for more than 30 years, it was only during the past 10 years that collaboration between researchers and the biocontrol… Show more

“…Ideal environmental conditions for N. cucumeris were based on the standard rearing conditions according to IOBC Quality Control Guidelines (Van Lenteren, Hale, & Klapwijk, 2003). Temperature and RH in the greenhouse and environmental chamber were recorded using sensors (Hobo U12-012, Onset).…”

“…We quantified life-history parameters, including 'short term fecundity' and 'mortality', which are currently used in commercial quality control programs of P. persimilis (van Lenteren 1996(van Lenteren , 1998van Lenteren et al 2003). Several behavioral parameters including 'response to HIPV', 'tendency to leave a prey patch', 'predation rate' and 'walking speed' are recorded, as predator behavior plays a prominent role in foraging success and disease transmission (Andreadis 1987;Sabelis and Dicke 1985;Janssen 1999;Zemek and Nachman 1999).…”

“…Essa característica representa grande potencialidade da espécie estudada e menor gasto, pois em menor quantidade de ovos dos hospedeiros alternativos, é possível obter a quantidade de fêmeas necessárias para liberações em campo. Além disso, razão sexual superior a 0,5 é considerada adequada no controle de qualidade na produção massal desses agentes (van Lenteren et al 2003).…”
